tender_square i took the muddy path because i could,
slipping in what could take me down if i
strode too quick. rainwater pooled into marshes,
tiny ravines that ran into the creek.
he sang through earbuds about a tarpit
in the sky, my chest-pocketed cell phone
undulating sonic waves into my vena
cava. i walked past the wigwam of sticks,
ducked my head inside that timber ribcage;
glistening bones beyond their rightful place.
my body pumped his heartsong into air
with solace for who he’s helped me become.
