things are heating up in our household. the fridge’s temperature keeps rising, causing cool puddles in the crisper drawers. each day, i clear the produce from the containers, slide out drawers from their tracks, turn them over and empty their stream into the sink. once a week, i take a large bath towel to the bottom of the fridge cavity and soak up the frigid sop, breaking the thin ice chips forming around every curve. the first transformation is afoot, ice moves to liquid, puddling and spreading at the lowest point. what was once solid between us is evaporating. in my dream, he left the double doors wide open and water inundated the volume of each drawer. he says he meant to do this when i ask him. waterlogged tomato slices disintegrate in my hands, spinach leaves stick to my skin, the crisp shells of cucumbers and yellow peppers are soft and fragile like rained-on newspaper. all this nourishment, wasted.
