blueberries at the ski school, sometimes the facepainting begins when a child remembers having it done last year and he asks for it, or like today when i asked a child and in five minutes there's a line of thirty waiting.

one boy about six, was extremely eager and didn't quite understand the concept of cutting line. he was pushed several times by angry kids following the rules. finally, when it was his time, he wanted to be princess jasmine. i thought maybe i was mistaken. maybe he was a girl with a short haircut, for facial features are somewhat ambiguous at this age.

so i fullfilled his request, even as onlookers snickered and cajoled. i remembered a french film i once saw, called, "my life in pink," when the boy dressed like a girl because he like d it, but it was hiding a more serious problem.

when his older brother's turn was next, i asked him why his brother wanted to be painted as a princess and he told me he didn't know. but he seemed perturbed with him. i asked him if his dad would be mad at me for doing it. he said their dad didn't live with them. he was in kentucky.

so that was it. i didn't need to ask any more questions.
