crow
birdmad i got pissed off for a bit at the office and needed to take a walk until i cooled down

i walked over to the memorial plaza at the center of the capital complex

lots of the ususal lesser ravens and crows, cryptoleucus and imparatus

--but as i was finishing my walk and headed back, in the depressed area of the groundworks on the nice grassy expanse was a huge raven, oddly alone since they are social animals walking along at a pace similar to my own stopping occasionally to intimidate and harass the clutches of pigeons and sparrows that were congregated on the ground.

the mexican crows, the imparatus, considerably smaller, gave him wide berth to pass but a couple of younger ones got brave and swooped him a couple of times making their odd little "kkak! kkak!" noises at him

i stopped and watched to see what he would do next

he spread his wings and let out a loud caw and from across the street i saw three more large ravens hop up to perch on the ledge of the Supreme Court building across the street

the imparati broke away from their next swoop and joined their wiser kin by the treeline in giving the raven room to do whatever he was doing. i tried to get closer, stalking up as quietly as i could, knowing he'd take my eyes if i tried to grab him but wanting to see him up closer.

i guess i wasn't quiet enough. he sped up a little bit before deciding that unlike his little cousins, i might be a problem.

he spread his wings and joined the others on the Courthouse rooftop, flying over the Arizona's anchor on its memorial pedestal

on the ground, the imparati and the cryptoleuci in the trees gossiped back and forth among themselves

"kkak!" "kkrrk" "krr" "kkak."
earfuls of animated chatter behind me as i walked back to the office

Bizzar around my neck dangles a pendant. it’s an ornamental black frame with a silver crow skull in the center. it’s your logo, and it symbolizes you so well. fitting that it sits just above my heart.

when the ache is deep like this, i wrap my hand around it and squeeze. i close my eyes and imagine the tiny skull between your fingers as you shaped it. it eases the burn of the tears to know that your hands have been where mine are now.
