Documentary Redraws Humans' Family Tree

Hillary Mayell
for National Geographic News
January 21, 2003

By analyzing DNA from people in all regions of the world, geneticist Spencer Wells has concluded that all humans alive today are descended from a single man who lived in Africa around 60,000 years ago.

In Journey of Man, Spencer Wells traces human evolution from Africa through Asia to the Navajo people of North America.

George Bush and John Kerry, 10th cousins! Bush related to ALL the other presidents. Bush, Kerry and their running mates descend directly from the prophet Mohammed, as do about 70% of all Americans! John Edwards more closely related to Elvis than his cousins Bush, Kerry, and Cheney. And thousands of other fascinating relationships with kings, queens, horse thieves, and just plain folk.

ALEXANDER, NC (PRWEB) September 5, 2004 -- Alexander Books a publishing imprint of Creativity, Inc.—Western North Carolina’s largest locally owned book publisher—announces the national release of Bush/Kerry and Their OTHER Cousins! by Ralph Roberts.

Humanity,” Roberts says, “is a lot more closely related than most people realize.”

If you were to trace your own ancestry back a mere 20 generations, he explains, you’ll find that you have (and everyone has) 1,048,576 20th great grandparents, spread out over a wide geographic area, through many countries and over several continents. That would be people living around the 1400s for most of us now alive. Follow the lines of their children, their childrens’ children, and so forth back to this present time and you have tens of millions of cousins!

He calls this concept Full Genealogy, as opposed to traditional genealogy, which tends to focus on just ancestors, and thus misses the fascinating branches coming back up from the past.

Roberts, in his book, shows how using the vast family tree records now on the Internet, you can prove just about anybody related to anybody, but even he was surprised at how closely related Bush and Kerry are.

It’s easy for anyone, to do, he says. “You can proudly show your lineage from the Emperor Charlemagne and descent from a thousand years of kings and queens, knights and barons, dukes, and counts.”

One chapter in Bush/Kerry and Their OTHER Cousins! shows how about 70 percent of all Americans descend directly from the Prophet Mohammed. This means that any of the many millions of Arabs living today across North Africa, in Saudi Arabia, yes even in Iraq are no more distantly related to most of us than somewhere around 40th cousin! Bush and Kerry are both about 40th great-grandsons of the Prophet, as is documented in this book.

Take current events, for example, such as the recent conflict in the city of Najaf in Iraq, where the Islamic fundamentalist cleric Al-Sadar had taken over the Iman Ali mosque—Ali being the founder of the Sh’ite branch of Islam. Ali married Mohammed’s (or Muhammad’s) daughter Fatima, but he was also the son of Mohammed’s uncle, Abu Tabid. Which makes him the 1st cousin 40 times removed of both George Bush and John Kerry, not to mention being their great-uncle by marriage as well (38th of Bush, 37th of Kerry).

Ralph Roberts is the author of over 90 books for national publishers, including two editions of Genealogy via the Internet, the leading guide to Full Genealogy.

Bush, Kerry & Hefner: Odd Cousins

NEW YORK, March 4, 2004

President George W. Bush and Sen. John Kerry are related. Well, sort of. They're ninth cousins, twice removed. So what's a little competition between family?

The two presidential contenders also share a widely known common relative, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, who is the ninth cousin of both men (the number nine is a coincidence). Twice removed from Mr. Bush, Hefner is a slightly closer relation to Kerry, only once removed.

"Well I feel closer to Senator Kerry," Hefner chuckled, over the phone from the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles.

"You know I'm an 11th generation direct descendent of William Bradford, who came over on the Mayflower, a direct descendent of a puritan," Hefner continued proudly, finding no irony in the fact. "I suppose that it is not a big surprise but it is certainly unique to be a relation to both candidates."

Previous research released last month found that Mr. Bush and his de facto Democratic challenger were 16th cousins. Now the two candidates expected to compete in one of the bitterest and certainly longest general elections in decades are nearly twice as close as first thought. Like brothers, more or less; well, more less than more.

"You never know, they may be closer, this is only what has been connected so far," said Bruce Harrison, who heads a group called Millisecond Publishing which puts out a line of ancestral history CDs from Waimea, Hawaii. "I hope it means that people will be nicer to each other and you always hope for a nicer campaign."

Millisecond Publishing's massive database collects family trees of notable figures. According to their research, the shared ancestors of both men are Thomas and Welthian Richards of Weymouth, Mass., early 17th century Plymouth Colony residents who were some of the original Pilgrims, emigrants from England.

The Richards' daughter Mary married Thomas Hinckley, governor of the Plymouth Colony, and through their son, Samuel, they are the ancestors of President Bush. Their daughter Anna married Captain Ephraim Hunt, and through their son Thomas they are the ancestors of Kerry.

Through the same lineage, both men are linked to Gen. Douglas MacArthur and President Franklin D. Roosevelt; even infamous traitor Benedict Arnold and attempted presidential assassin John Hinckley Jr., have thick enough blue-blood roots to call themselves relations. The two candidates also have very distant links to Princess Diana and President George Washington.

Kerry's most quirky relation is Johnny Appleseed. Yes, there really was a Johnny Appleseed. Kerry and Appleseed are sixth cousins. Appleseed, whose real name was John Chapman, was born in 1774 and made a name for himself as a naturalist traveling the country for 50 years, growing, of course, apple trees among other things.

"You have your first cousin and you share the same grandparents; your second and you share the same great grandparents. So when you get back to your ninth cousins that means you share the ancestor 11 generations ago," explained Tony Burroughs, a genealogist at Chicago State University.

"Bush and Kerry might find it odd. They might not even like that they do share a common ancestor and I don't think they consider themselves relativesonly a genealogist would," Burroughs said. "But it is a really good piece of trivia."

Hefner, who also said he found his relationship to the two men interesting if not necessarily relevant, finds his link to Mr. Bush and Kerry through Major William Bradford. One of the Richards' daughters, Alice, married Bradford, and it's through their son, Lieutenant Thomas Bradford, that Hefner is descended.

The Playboy magnate, who said he is keeping up with the election, finds it all very funny. Neither candidate has recognized the other as a relation, but Hefner thinks they should and that the link would lead to a less combative election year.

"I hope they have a campaign that deals with the real issues and not personalities," Hefner said, adding that he would do his best to help Kerry raise money.

Nonetheless, Hefner still had good words for Mr. Bush, his unbeknownst cousin until Thursday.

"I wish him well, he's our president," Hefner said, hoping both men would visit him at the Playboy Mansion for a little rest and relaxation. "I would be delighted to invite both President Bush and Senator Kerry for a family reunion," Hefner added, laughing to himself.

BUSH AND KERRY ARE SONS OF WICKFORD!

If you've ever wondered what the mysterious W in George W. Bush's name stands for, consider this possibility: Wickford.

All right, then, it might not be (it is, in fact, Walker) - but the American President does have some surprising connections to the south Essex town.

And it gets better, it turns out his presidential election rival, Senator John Kerry, is a distant relative of his and also has ancestral ties to Essex.

Both family trees reveal links to a gentry family in Wickford dating back to the 17th century.

Ground-breaking research by an American genealogist, Gary Boyd Roberts, has revealed the pair, who are currently fighting the US election are ninth cousins, twice removed.

Their common ancestor was a member of the minor gentry called Edmund Reade, who was born and died in Wickford.

Public records reveal that Edmund Reade was born in 1563 and died in 1623 after fathering two sons who are both believed to have died young, and two daughters.

After his death, his daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, sailed to New England with their mother in the 1630's.

Both married into powerful families, Winthrop and Lake, who eventually produced the two presidential candidates.

Sarah Dickie, an archivist at Essex Records Office, said the records of the Reade family made his relationship to the two candidates possible.

She said "The facts do look to add up. Of course, there are bits and pieces that don't match, but that could be due to lots of reasons.

In a book we published, which looks at the Essex immigration to the US in the 17th century, we have a piece about Elizabeth Reade, daughter of Edmund Reade, who married John Winthrop in 1635."

Mr. Roberts, speaking from Massachusetts, said the results of his research were not entirely surprising. He said "News that Bush and Kerry are related does not cause a stir in this country."

Mr. Kerry's father's family were Jews from the Austro-Hungarian empire who changed their name from Kohn to Kerry before emigrating to America in 1904.

Mr. Bush son of a former president and grandson of a senator, can trace his family to the Mayflower immigrants and to some of the oldest families in the country.

The Wickford connection is the closest bloodline linking the candidates, but they have seven other common ancestors.

HOW THEY ARE RELATED

George Bush and John Kerry are officially ninth cousins, twice removed. This means they share the same two great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents and their ancestors.

Paper Trails: My presidential cousins John and George
Wednesday, September 22, 2004

By ELIZABETH S. LUDAS

Something must be done about Cousin George. I’m going to have a word about him with Cousin John.

The New York Times recently printed a genealogical chart showing that John Kerry and George Bush are cousins by virtue of having a number of direct ancestors in common. Their closest connection makes them ninth cousins, but they share several other common ancestors.

Some of the names rang bells, so I called my father, who has pursued his interest in genealogy for 50 years and more.

He’s not thelet me sell you your family coat of arms even though your ancestors were serfs” kind of genealogist, but the scholarly kind. He and I spent a summer afternoon in the mid-1960s doing headstone rubbings in a Vermont graveyard, and the results were published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, my first and only contribution to the scholarly literature.

It turns out that George Bush, John Kerry, and I are all direct descendants of Henry Herrick of Salem, Mass.; the Rev. Edward Bulkeley of Odell, Bedfordshire; and of Henry Sherman of Dedham, Essex, all born in the 16th century. Through our descent from these three, the candidates and I can call one another cousin. Tenth or 11th cousins, but still.

My father says that any two people descended from early Massachusetts families can pretty much bet they’re related. My parents are ninth cousins. I roomed with a ninth cousin at college. The organist at my upstate New York church turned out to be my 10th cousin and she’s been Cousin Mary ever since. Maybe I can get her to lean on Cousin John, too.

(The roommate isn’t cousin anything. We didn’t get on very well.)

Do I acquire any kind of merit through knowing about these ancestors? No, but I like thinking about them, in a baseball-card collector sort of way.

I am also descended, on my mother’s side, from Dutch settlers in New York and Long Island; from a fisherman named John Harrigan who left Ireland for Newfoundland in 1799, and whose grandson, my great-grandfather, became an actor and playwright in New York City. I am also descended from English Jews named Braham, some of whom came to New York. The Brahams were musicians, and one of them, David, wrote the music for Ned Harrigan’s plays. His daughter Annie married Ned, and several of their children and grandchildren went on the stage.

One of my Massachusetts ancestors, Mary Bradbury, in 1692 was charged with “certaine detestable arts called Witchcraft and Sorceries Wickedly Mallitiously and felloniously hath used practised and Exercised at and in the Towne of Salem...”

I sometimes think of them as if they all knew one another, somewhere, you know, “up there,” where ancestors go. I can’t imagine what the dour (or so I think of them) Congregationalists would have to say to the Nieuw Amsterdam merchants, or what gnarly old John Harrigan would make of his grease-painted great-grandchildren. And I wonder how any of them got the courage to get on those little leaky boats.

I fear they’d all find me pretty jejune, simply because my life is so much freer of toil than any of theirs. How could they not look with scorn on a woman who sits at a desk most of the day and then claims to be too tired to make dinner?

Knowing the mixture of love and exasperation I feel toward my family of origin, I suspect that something of the same would apply if my ancestors and I were to meet, no matter how extended the family might be.

If I were to meet Henry and Henry and the Rev. Edward, we’d look at each other warily, and then we’d start to talk. I’d explain a few things that would be new and strange to them, and then we’d get onto the subject of Cousin George. After that, it would probably be smooth sailing.
