I do not believe that genius is an absolute quantity with a fixed benchmark...while i would not label smith among the greatest musicians to have ever existed, i will say that for someone who has been part of a genre which falls in and out of fashion and kept an audience he must possess some gift which sets him apart...
maybe not a genius like miles or charlie or monk (or mozart or bartok) but something...

I LOVE the argument at the top of this blathe.
I don't know if he is a creative genius, but I will say that his charisma is almost certainly unmatched.
NO ONE could incessantly bitch and moan and be totally weird in a way that still kept everyone's favor.
And he's ADORABLE on stage.
