rammstein
epitome of incomprehensibility I've only just now seen Rammstein's video for "Deutschland."

First, so I can get my Potentially Annoying Feminist Critique out of the way, the only major woman character in it is symbolic, which seems a pattern with them: crack-addicted Snow White in Sonne, evil village girl in Rosenrot. This time, though, she's not a femme fatale but the personification of Germany. Oh yeah, and she's black; was that a conscious pissing-off-racists move? Regardless, she gets some seriously cool costumes.

Anyway, the video has a mix of things alluding to different points in history of Germany, plus spacepunk/steampunk.

The beginning introduces both ancient-looking peasants and astronauts, which gives this a sort of 2001: A Space Odyssey feel. And there are a lot of red laser beams.

As an attempt to rearrange chronologically:

-Primitive tribes enter what will be Germany
-Medieval monks eat a lot of meat and keep prisoners under their table
-Teutonic knights wield glowing swords and Germania gets some seriously cool gold chainmail/armor
-Masonic meeting, for some reason
-Gangsters, for some reason - they have a shootout and get captured by police who lock them up in neck braces and throw money at them
-Nazis burn books and hang people but end up getting shot in a revolt
-60s astronauts
-Anti-police riot
-Future astronauts - they maybe go into space in a trapezoidal prism

Hmm, where are Martin Luther and the Berlin Wall? (And should Martin Luther sit on the Berlin Wall and eat a sandwich?) But nobody is saying this should be a "history of the entire germany, i guess" (bill wurtz reference).

And mine is just a first impression. Maybe Luther and his wall are in there somewhere.

e_o_i Okay, the flag with the compass symbol is East Germany's. Masons indeed.

The part in the lyrics about being divided could refer to what happened to the country in the Cold War.
