patent_fraudulence
disgusted I read in the paper today that various fiends hold U.S. patents for nearly 30% of human genes.

YOU DO NOT OWN US, YOU VILE FOOLS WHO ARE UNWORTHY OF THE SLIME YOU ARE MADE OF.

This made me so angry I was quaking.

And you? Are you comfortable with this?

birdmad outrage fatigue, more likely

we are subjected to so many things that shock, horrify and mystify us that we become jaded eventually even if it is in our better interest to stay "tuned in"

die fledermaus no, a fucking retarded bumpersticker suspects that. i just got tired of being outraged. somebody else pick up this axe. there's only so much bullshit i can choke down; i've got my life to live, too. i'm always paying attention, always.

:-P wow. listen to yourself, fleidermas, name-calling like a child! isn't it a bit ridiculous of you to become angered that someone mocked you, when you initiated the mockery by posting prudent_flatulence? i mean, come on. at least Disgusted had a point, one which we can all relate with. 070215

Lemon_Soda I really don't care if someone patents my genes unless they tell me I can't have my body anymore,or i can't pass those genes on(I like sex). "But what if they clone you?". Sure, it'd be weird running into someone who looks just like me, but they would have their own experiences make them what they are, not mine. We would still be different people. And if they do some weird Seventh Day brain xerox, I wouldn't care either. ATLAST someone else who completely understands me, down to the core, will be around to talk too. I hope they clone me but during the process deny the chromosomes to make me male so i come out a chick. I could literally fuck myself. Oh she/I would do it, too. In a fucking heartbeat.

cranky old bird your anger over the state of things in the world is laudable and well-intended, but time will tell whether or not you can sustain your presumably righteous rage or whether age and the onslaught of humbling (if not outright humiliating) experiences that come with it will blunt you to the point of less ire and more bemused annoyance.

Besides, if you put things up in an open forum, your self-seriousness is sure to invite the sort of joker who popped up the prudent_flatulence blathe

in short, kid, welcome to the internet, passionate discourse is always appreciated, but seriously, get the fuck over yourself especially around here because there are plenty of jokers around here and no person or utterance is sacrosanct

AhvseeNDisbefoRehaventyoU? Truly there are many problematic things in this world. Perhaps to some, there are dark philosophical overtones to the idea that one [person] "owning" the rights to a DNA sequence shared by all. Personally I think there are "bigger fish to fry", but at the same time, I know what it is like to feel threatened by something and then have others laugh at it. For some people this may passify their terror, but for others, it semms mocking and exacerbatory.

Is either party really right or wrong? Is D.F. wrong to have jested about something regarded by another as serious? Of course not. At the same time, do I like having things I take seriously jested about by others? Generally not. Truthfully, I've been on both sides of this, and [to me] there is relatively equal legitimacy to either party's claim, given that we are yet in the realm of opinions.

I will observe that [most of] the previous [read: initial set of] exchanges seem lacking in respect on both sides, in approximately equal proportions.

Why must these exchanges always become so toxic? I suppose Disgusted had more than a bit of something noxious in the original post... before others toxified it further, [perhaps] now including me.

All in all, we seem to be such a ridiculous, blundering species that I can't understand why anyone would even *want* to own part of our genetics. You'd think being connected to such responsibility, in any way, would be more of an embarrassment than a claim to fame....
