There is no reliable estimate on the number of injuries suffered by Iraqis since the beginning of ground fighting and bombings, labeled at the time by the Bush administration as a "shock and awe campaign" First a point of accuracy: It appears that IraqBodyCount.com is merely a parasitic knock-off of IraqBodyCount.net, which does the actual counting. The latter is not maintained by a group of "American academics", but by Professor John Sloboda, currently on leave from his job teaching the "Psychology of Music" at the University of Keele in the U.K. (On the other hand, the Iraq Body Count has been questioned by real American academics). Minor details and credentials aside, the real problem with Liane Hansen's report is that she implies that the "Iraq Body Count" is the number of Iraqi civilians killed by U.S. and coalition forces. Most listeners will realize that these deaths are unintentional and tragic consequences of military action. But Liane Hansen really should have mentioned that the cited numbers also include the many Iraqi civilians deliberately murdered by the terrorists whom our military is working to defeat. It also would have been helpful to put this number in the context of the number of Iraqi civilians killed by Saddam's regime.
