GAZA CITY, 29 January 2005 (1292005) — Hamas swept Thursday’s municipal elections in Gaza, winning as many as 77 seats out of 118 in 10 councils, Palestinian election officials said yesterday. The movement’s spectacular win in the poverty-stricken territory came as Israel announced a halt to operations in the Gaza Strip.
