user24 BA As some of you know, I've been doing a degree for the last three years. I just got my results today and I'm now the proud owner of a first class IT and Philosophy BA. My long term partner also got a first in her discipline. We both came top of our classes, and we're rather pleased.

So I guess that means I'm now:

µ oxford rejected both of us. ah well.

They rejected Linds offhand (her course didn't have an interview so it was always going to be either yes or no straight off). Which is ridiculous given that she got a first, and has 3As and 2Bs at A2 Level (for undergrad they typically only need AAA, so she has 2Bs more than that). But she didn't go to a private school.

I screwed up the interview; they asked me (with no preparation, with pen and paper only) how I would write code to calculate the nth degree of a fibonacci sequence without using a loop or recursion. I still have no idea. At least it seemed that that was what they were asking. I'm not upset about it actually, I only applied because, hey, I got a first - might as well.

no matter. I'm happy. I'll probably do a phd someday.

µ they changed their mind. I'm going to Oxford.

What a strange feeling.

It's really ruptured our lives. We were quite happy. We'd saved enough money for Linds to do hers in London, I was looking forward to moving to London. All was good.

Now she can't go and we're going to have to save so much more money. I'm sure it will sink in eventually. I just wish Linds had been accepted in my place. She wanted it so much more than I did.

FUCK YOU. hello, ding dong?
NOCK KNOCK, ARE YOU AWAKE YET?

why are you doing a frigging degree to get a wanking mark on a piece of paper?

It won't help you darling, you are better off licking arses and learning cocktail making in you free time.

it's who you know not what you know in this world, and your skills (what ever they may be), go to the bottom of the pack; its the control freaks that get the doe. The rest just about get enough to pay off their mortgage by the time its time to die.
Get used to it or but a frigging wendy house.

neesh well it's good for english, being a depository library, and having a three library system (college/faculty/university). last term i was reading first editions of seventeenth century plays :)
it supposedly has the fastest internet connection in europe.
having world experts look at your work can be great, but tutors do really vary in helpfulness (and niceness).
each college has very different facilities, when it comes to libraries, food, accommodation, computers, etc, so that depends on where you end up.
eating out in oxford is quite expensive, so hopefully your accommodation will have cooking facilities, or your college dinners will be good and cheap.
each term drives me slightly crazier, but in all i do love it there.

PISS OFF. seventeenth century plays !
fucking hell !
why don't you invent something new and get marked for it at the same time at least ?
it sounds incredibly boring.

i hope you are not using public money for that.
We don't need cranky plays we need decent politicians that don't have a friggin' ego.
What are you going to do with seventeenth century plays? supply water to people that don't have it?

and if your thinking you might be scouted by the Mi6 for having a degree from Oxford then your wrong.

pissing on PISS OFF well, we know who's a right flaming twat, now don't we. 080310
...
PISS OFF. if you can't spell, it means you can't be a plumber, we don't want plumbers anyway. we don't need people that design cool things like hovercrafts and Ferraris, we don't need musicians because music is depressing.

what we do need is people that know seventeenth century plays inside and out so that they can teach other people seventeenth century plays inside out so that they can teach other people seventeenth century plays inside and out so that....

"thank you" said Jane

oh, thank you for your thank you" said Peter

thank you for saying thank you for saying thank you for my thank you" said Jane

well, thank you for saying thank you for me thanking you for your thank you" said Peter

thats why we need to study ridiculous things at play school so that we can teach other people ridiculous things and maybe one day we can make a drab play for boring people to watch.

falling_alone oxford: they filmed harry potter there.

i'm working on bullshiting fashion design, and can't think of a more appropriate title for my major.
but i like to pretend that i really do believe in this industry, meanwhile we all say fuck you in this post-modernist culture... i change my mind every day just to defy you.
080310
...
neesh yeah i totally see what you mean, PO. apart from the point of education being to spawn politicians and ferraris. an english degree... shock horror, doesn't have a point. you can be political within it if you like. you can try to use it to learn about human nature, society, politics or history, if you like. or you can read first edition restoration comedies.

like most people in england, the degree i get doesn't have to have anything to do with the job i get after, it's just something that'll help me get a job. what i learn from it are skills, namely the ability to deal with pressure, synthesise information quickly, time manage, explain myself and understand other perspectives. and if i use those skills to organise charity events, which i do when i can, then yes, i'll use seventeenth century plays to give water to people who need it. (as charity goes, i'm most interested in donating to crisis aid. amusingly, i was thinking of adapting and staging a restoration comedy as a charity event...)

as for the idea that education is a self perpetuating cycle, i like it. it's an interesting one. i do in fact want to be an english teacher, at around gcse level, because i reckon what english teaches, most importantly, are communication skills, and i think the world would be a slightly better place if people understood each other a little better. english gcse also involves creative writing, and i think the world would be a slightly better place if the people in it were a little more imaginative. and i want to show that i'm capable enough of dealing with pressure, organised enough, and knowledgeable enough to teach. i don't want to try to run a country; my ego isn't that big. i want to try to run a classroom, and try to marginally improve on some people's lives, by helping them to be more capable of saying what they mean and to understand what others mean. those'll be the results of my degree, i hope.

well, at the same time, i am the kind of person who believes that education is in and of itself a good thing. and that art is too.

asher i know you're to dim to realise how your actions affect others, but you've managed to make my professional life a living hell. i worked hard to get where i am, to overcome the acusations that my job was a family handout. I got my job because I'm good at what I do, and, up until today, I loved it. I hand picked it and fought for it the way everyone else had in the past. Using me as an example of the department [and my mother's] negligence of those in our position is, aside from being disgustingly false, cruel and unusual. Especially in light of the fact that you sent this piece of information to everyone I work with. You've insulted me and my family based on your own ill-gotten information and ignorance. Would that my words were lighter fluid, spitting from my mouth, to ignite the open flame you've exposed in me.

yes, i agree that education is a good thing but eventually you will understand that your whole life is an education, everyone should teach everyone what they know in my opinion, it's a way of sharing.

I'm not sure what you are on about when you say "charity", what is "charity" to you? is it feeling like you've done a good deed and therefore feel a better person or is it something unconditional and therefore not "charity" at all? people tend to call it "charity" because they don't fully understand the meaning and natural flow of compassion.

As for you not wanting to run a "country" (because your ego is not big enough!) ummmmm.... is that what you really think!! do you think someone should have an ego for putting up fences ?!

keep ya mind active, keep reading, writing, singing, daydreaming and humming and you might get a medal !

Do you disagree?
