blathersuggestions
eric the ability to put in line breaks in word entries would be cool. 980907
...
eric if we had a form that would take a URL for an image or audio file, it would be easy enough to load a word page with an image and/or audio/midi file. then we could add image or music interpretations of words. 980907
...
eric several database-type ideas: a *current* option that would display blather entries of the current time period (week/month) only. a *new* option that would only display entries newer than x days or 24 hrs. a *people* option that would specify display of entries only by certain person(s). also it would be cool if you could select two/more people and get a list of all (or date range specified) entries containing submissions by only the selected people. 980907
...
eric a simple date selection idea: select a date range for entry display; it could be used in conjunction with other options. essentially you would create a filter from a number of query options. to summarize: you could select a person or specific people; a specified date range or date preset--random/current/all; multimedia yes/no options--images/video clips/audio with specific image/audio/video artist combinations. 980907
...
eric wouldn't blather be a cool personal word journal/diary thing? you could have it offer a random word everyday and make an entry on the word, but the word would just be the starting point for a journal entry. it would be cool as a personal, stand-alone app or as a big group journal with the search filters. if there was something like this, i'd like to have an automatic *moonstamp* that would stamp each entry with the current lunar phase so that you could search entries based on the phase of the moon. 980907
...
charley It would be nice to see reverse associations of words.. What words are linked into the current word.. It would be nice to see word association mapping with references to people that blathed.. 980907
...
eric what about a *party blather*, where you have a *blather station* at a party and people make entries throughout the party. later you could read through the entries (especially cool for parties that become alternate reality events). what if you could specify a range of keywords for each entry instead of just one word, then later query against a list of keywords, and still hyper-link keywords appearing in the entries. 980907
...
eric it would be cool to have a list of *who's online* even if there were no direct interaction. 980907
...
Jake Sage, don't play with your schootchy-sniffer. 980923
...
drew a dictionary, perhaps in alphabetical order, but maybe in chronological order of appearance. 980925
...
emma yeah, a blather-like program you'd have on your computer would rock. Sage and Dallas could make a lot of money off this thing. 980926
...
jack yes, this would definitely make a
great party game. and i don't even
like parties.

i'd probably just play this thing
all night, and avoid everyone. heh.
980929
...
dallas money? Did somebody say money? I want sex! 980930
...
dallas isn't there already a from command associate with each word that shows you what words are linked to that word? (in answer to Charley) Is that not what you wanted? 980930
...
dallas If it were setup in a party, I think it should have several places to play it so multiple people could be adding words at once. That's exciting. 980930
...
michael I think charley might have suggested it before it was a feature. (notice how i can't really be wrong about this, grin) 981001
...
ang i like the idea of the party version of blather. it gives those of use out of touch with reality a place to go for fun. i'd definately do it. 981001

josh Notice how if you backtrack to blather/b/, you get a directory listing? Isn't that like, bad? 981013
...
josh Oh and maybe newer entries to each word she be listed at the top, instead of at the bottom. 981013
...
josh God I'm critical. How about this? When you go to a word page, and you click on a name, you get all the words they did, right? But when you click a word, you get that word page, but you're at the top. Why not an anchor directly to that person's entry on that page? If you wanted to just see that person's stuff.

But then again, maybe all this direct-access searching stuff is a bad idea. Part of the charm is the randomness with which the user navigates.
981013
...
josh And maybe it would be nice if the name wasn't like the same type as the blather only one size smaller. It kinda runs together. 981013
...
josh Okay, I'll shut up now. 981013
...
emma back when this was at dreamhost.com/~sage/blather/, you could check a directory listing and it would give you a forbidden notice. So I never tried it again. But I don't think there's anything bad about a list of words. 981026
...
thenestor I have to agree with Mr. Endquote (I think it's that Josh... yeah, no one else talks that much...) that the names on the left tend to run into the text on the right.

When I first saw blather, I didn't realize those were names. Possibly that's because the first person whose blather I saw was named "i".

And as long as I'm here, in the only seemingly logical entry in the database, I'd like to mention that Emma is a particularly entertaining blatherer.

You go girl.

Maybe the people who write the most intriguing blatherings (am I using this word at all correctly? ...I have no idea how to correctly conjugate it) should get an award. Like a car. Or a pencil. Or a picture of a pencil. Or maybe a candy bar. Or a picture of David Hasselhoff.

I don't know. Whatever.
981121
...
k do you have to have special - privelages - or something - to start a new word? help... :) 981122
...
emma um, no, of course not. just go to /cgi-bin/sage/blather.pl?addform and type away.

man, it would suck if one couldn't make up words.
981123
...
josh Man, does this place need a redesign, or what? :) 990203
...
Emily Although a monkey could probably go to the directory and find a word that they were looking for, I still think that it would be neat to have a search function so that people could see if certain people have blathered, or if certain words have been added yet or something.. searchable by people or word. Dunno.. just a thought. 990204

Rainer Krauss gawd ... i just read trough all the suggestions and now I forgot what I wanted to say. 990208

Is something wrong with the proxy hosts? Am I stupid? Who shot Elmar Fudd? Can you heal me? Do I ask too much? 990217
...
j Can we have a Dave Matthews Band word?

Please?
990217
...
coldtea You should let anyone start a new word. (I promise I wouldn't do Dave Matthews.) 990221
...
h8r why are you all having problems with new words? just erase out the word in the field and type in your new one. whenever i feel like blathering that's what i do. and that's the reason why i started the word bitch! because it needed accurate definiton.

anyway. i don't suggest a new word, but possibly, could we do something about misspelled new words? like a "Are you sure?" challenge. i know how to do it with cfml but this cgi stuff is all new to me...

ever welcoming they should start a blather_welcome_wagon, so everyone (upon signing up (you _did_ all sign up, right?)) would get a fruit basket complete with durian, kiwi, persimmon, a hand gun, a case of microbrews, a pack of rubs, and a tube of anti-fungal ointment.

"wiggity word my niggaz" could be printed on the welcome wagon team's t-shirts, cuz then people would feel more welcome, dui_bu_dui?

niska we're such typical humans, no?

we burn forests to make room for cows, so we can eat at fast-food restuarants because we're too fat & lazy to get off our asses to cook a damn healthy meal once in a while.

and if there's an animal in the back yard, that we haven't domesticated, we kill it.

this space is what it is. adapting it to our needs would lead us to fail as humans - again.

i like blather the way it is.

though some italics would be nice, i can get by...

Dafremen The pages only appear on google if they were up on the main page long enough to get picked up by the spider bots. I think a search feature would be very nice, but would probably get used so damned much that it would end up bogging down the server. 030822

User24 I wish there was a "don't go" button, that took you to a blathe that didn't exist yet, and said, 'hey, write something brand new about this word, if you will' 031011
...
u24 would it be cool if every blathe title was checked against a dictionary, and then blather wouldn't let you create that blathe if it wasn't a dictionary word?

of course, it'd have to be multilingual, but the (questionable) benefit would be that there'd be no underscore_connected_phrase(s).

it'd certainly be different.

and I think a little more like how blather was supposed to be
(supposed, as in, closer to the original concept by dallas/sage)

Thpppt Accck hmmm....the "don't go" feature might be nice, but i already notice unused words and phrases during blathes.

oh and i most vehemental disagree with the limitations you suggest (no blathes with underscored attachments....F**K that (the well thought out arguement and all)....and limiting this blue dream to only words in the dictionary....another F**K that, any constraints imposed upon this nonsensical experiment, will taint the end results (assuming they want some, maybe they have a twenty year or even 10 year plan/cutoff date, then a ten year period of studying all of our individual data and group data....blah....blah....blah), and limit free expression.
