bufflehead (a rainforest lovestory)

High in the canopy she glides,
midst vines and sleeping howlers.
Her sonic cries
strike the skin
of ripe fruit,
and return in tremulous waves
to her silken ears.

Darting, diving,
she collides with torrid precision
against the tree's swollen ovary.
Snared in her membranous grasp,
the fruit twists--
and relinquishes.

She flies to nether forest,
where she hangs upside-down,
masticating fragrant Dipterix flesh.
Tangy nectar
wets her fur,
and she drops the gnawed core
to the envious insects below.

You are sweet fruit, my love.
I am the night creature that devours you.
