But Minutes after a massive earthquake rocked the Indian Ocean on Sunday, international ocean monitors knew that a tsunami would likely follow.

they didn't know whom to tell.

monee there should be an international disaster network that warns people, any people anywhere, of something like this when it happens

imagine if, when that quake went off and sensors picked it up, a computer (or people) had calculated where the waves could hit, and warned any area threatened.

coulda gone something like this:
earthquake hits, computer reads data, sends out signal, sirens/warnings instantly go off in any area possibly affected, people evacuate in time.

imagine if those people on those beaches had heard sirens, had gotten out of there.

if people would stop fighting wars, they could use all that money to do things like this...
they could have these systems in place already (not to mention so many other things).

i know individual countries can do this, but i think that the whole world should come together to protect earth's citizens.

and i mean, krakatoa is right close by there to where this happened,...where's it at in people's brains that they couldn't foresee something like this happening, and put a system in place that could've helped prevent such loss of life?

why do people have to fight so gourd darned much? war is such a waste.

feeling frustrated with the world

"Q Mr. President, are you confident that the U.S. west coast residents -- Hawaiian residents, Alaska residents -- are well enough protected with early warning systems for possible tsunamis affecting this country and coastal --

THE PRESIDENT: No, I appreciate that question, it's a -- I think that part of the long-term strategy in how to deal with natural disaster is to make sure we have -- "we," the world, has a proper tsunami warning system. As a matter of fact, the President of Sri Lanka also mentioned that to me. She said that one of the things that she and the Prime Minister of India discussed -- I'm not sure they discussed it, but they're both thinking the same way, let me put it to you that way -- is the development of a proper warning system. And I think it's going to be very -- I can't answer your question specifically, do we have enough of a warning system for the west coast. I am going to -- I am now asking that to our agencies and government to let us know. I mean, that's a very legitimate question. Clearly, there wasn't a proper warning system in place for that part of the world, and it seems like to me it makes sense for the world to come together to develop a warning system that will help all nations."

^ its because the indian ocean Doesnt Have ocean monitors that the officals at the Pacific Tsunami Center in Hawaii didn't know if there was a tsunami

they knew there was an earthquake off the coast of sumatra, and that it could've caused a tsunami, but they had no way of knowing weather it had or not

the wave hit aceh in sumatra 15 minutes after the earthquake, so they probably wouldn't'v ben able to save the 150,000 ppl that died there anyway

but if the indian ocean was set up with early warning systems like the pacific ocean, they could've save the other 70,000 or so in the other countries.

by the time they did figure out there was a tsunami- over 3 hours after the initial earthquake- they did manage to warn officials on the eastern african coast. Because of these warnings, there was only one casulty in Kenya.

i agree that if They didnt focus everything on war then the indian ocean could've been set up with ocean monitors. its unbeleivable that only the pacific ocean has that privlege, so only the western countrys have warning.

on Janury 29th the UN agreed to have a complete ocean monitoring systam set up in the indian ocean in 18 months.

it took 200,000 dead to make Them wake up, but its not like any of us did anything about it. at least somethings being done now. Maybe there is still hope.
